The Coast Guard is a maritime security organization that performs various missions such as law enforcement, search and rescue, environmental protection, and national defense. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is one of the eight uniformed services of the U.S. and is under the Department of Homeland Security. The USCG has about 35,000 active-duty personnel and operates in all U.S. waters and around the world. The USCG also has a history of over 230 years, dating back to the establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service in 17902.

Some of the notable achievements of the USCG include:

  • Saving over 1.5 million lives since its inception

  • Conducting the largest maritime evacuation in history on September 11, 2001, transporting over 500,000 people from Lower Manhattan to safety

  • Leading the response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, the largest marine oil spill in U.S. history

  • Participating in major military operations such as World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom

  • Supporting scientific research and exploration in the Arctic and Antarctic regions

The USCG motto is “Semper Paratus”, which means “Always Ready” in Latin. The USCG is a proud and professional service that protects the nation’s maritime interests and security.
